Con.Txt report

corbae, raven
I was very much looking forward to Con.Txt this year. It was my second-ever fan con (as opposed to large anime cons or D*C) back in 2012, and I had a blast then.

I drove up Thursday and got caught in terrible storms a few times, so I arrived later than I'd meant to. I got all my things hauled in, parked my car, and got dinner, and arrived back at the hotel in time for registration to open. I spent some time there working on my bingo card & catching up with friends.

This is the writeup for the [community profile] con_txt 2014 Fun With Inverted Tropes panel, hosted by your mods [personal profile] corbae and [personal profile] v_greyson. We had a lot of fun moderating this panel, and want to thank everyone who came out! The audience participation was stellar, and we turned many tropes (and occasionally a mod) upside down. We did not call anyone’s remarks out by name, but if you’d like credit for your clever quip, please let us know in the comments!

I ran the Tolkien panel with [personal profile] zana16 at Con.txt this past weekend and had a great time! I'm even more excited to brush up on the Lord of the Rings and (finally) read the Silmarillion, now. At the end of the panel we asked for recs from participants and this is the list we came up with.

To Find Our Long Forgotten Gold (229583 words) by Wealhtheow21
Fandom: The Hobbit - All Media Types
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Summary: AU of movieverse. It is many years since tragedy struck the line of Durin when the youngest heir was lost to a pack of orcs. Now Bilbo Baggins, having agreed only to stealing treasure from a dragon, finds himself instead tangled up in a web of tragedy and revenge. Perhaps it's foolhardy of him to get involved at all, but really, someone has to try and keep these dwarves out of trouble. As for the rest, well, what is lost does not always stay lost forever.

Fandom: The Hobbit (2012), The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con
Relationships: Dwalin/Nori, Nori/shiny things
Summary: Nori is an excellent thief with a complicated family, Dwalin is an excellent guardsman with complicated feelings about a certain thief, a lot of UST and some smut happens, and then they both join a suicide quest to reclaim a mountain from a dragon and things get even more complicated and smutty.
Someday, they might actually be forced to come to terms with the fact that they don't hate each other.

Letters Over the Sea by Gytha and Prembone was recommended, but I haven't been able to find a copy online. Links would be welcome if anyone has one!

five things make a post

corbae, raven
1. I didn't post at all last month, but it was a pretty good month. I went to a couple shows, saw my parents a few times, and made great progress in hanging out with a new group of people, hereafter known as trivia!friends. I also saw some of my friends from the town where I attended college a few times. They're only 30 minutes away, but our schedules never seem to line up. We've all vowed to work on that.

Other events of note: snow (so much snow /o\), Book of Mormon, my birthday.

2. March started AMAZINGLY with a trip up north for [personal profile] cinco and [personal profile] siegeofangels' housewarming party. ♥♥♥ And then [profile] maralenenok made delicious blini for Maslenitsa, and I had caviar for the first time.

3. I did a lot of Wikipedia research on Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, and Lent in general on Tuesday for trivia purposes and decided to try giving something up for Lent. I settled on fancy coffee & chocolate drinks (to save money) and complaining (to make me happier). I resisted the urge to get a fancy coffee last night; we'll see if my willpower holds.

4. Last night was the live Welcome to Night Vale taping. No Children was playing on the PA when we came in, some nice foreshadowing for JOHN DARNIELLE walking onto stage not even halfway through the show. Judging by the reactions of the rest of the audience, there was one other person who cared about both WTNV and the Mountain Goats in the room. (I would generally excuse this as not knowing what J.D. looks like, but if you're a Mountain Goats fan, live in NC, and are a person who attends live performances, you have almost certainly seen him before.)

He was on stage for maybe 3 or 4 minutes, introduced as a bluegrass musician, implied to have done illegal things in the past, and played a metal "bluegrass lesson." I caught part of it on tape and you can listen here.

5. I already recommended this on Twitter, but I am starry-eyed in love with the story and must rec it EVERYWHERE.

It is still a WIP, but the author is posting daily updates and expects to finish in just a few more chapters. The author's tags, which I've removed here, contain content notes; please know that this story focuses on the aftermath of slavery.

Still consuming ALL the Hobbit fic.

I've been working on a recs post and have found that my favorite stories are centered around families, found and otherwise. Here is a post full of those stories. Most of them are Bilbo/Thorin and, if they follow the quest, most are also some form of fix-it for the Battle of the Five Armies. If you'd like to know whether a story contains a certain canonical character death, feel free to ask!

Little Steps (4362 words) by Etharei
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Unfortunately, his room has no window. He's considering hiding Kíli in his old toy chestbox when the door to his room swings open. He squeezes himself into the far corner of the room. In his arms, Kíli is shaking like a leaf, strong tiny fingers digging hard into Fíli's skin. All Fíli can see at first is a large, hulking figure, almost too tall to be a Dwarf.

I adore this story. ♥Siblings protecting each other♥

Of an Arcane Binding (44888 words) by Salvia_G
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Summary: An inexplicable magic ties Bilbo Baggins, hobbit of the Shire, to Thorin, dwarven prince of Erebor.

This is inspired by (two fanworks fusions with) the Time Traveler's Wife. After Bilbo appears a few times he's basically adopted into Thorin's family. I liked both the changes the author made to canon & the things they kept the same.

as sunshine falls on the wretched (18489 words) by KivrinEngle
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Bilbo Baggins, the newly appointed Master of Bag End, has just reached his majority. He lives alone in his fine house, managing his estate, and ignoring the people of Hobbiton as much as they avoid him. When a storm lands him with an unexpected (and unwelcome) little visitor, all Bilbo wants to do is find the baby Dwarf's missing family so he can get back to his own life.

That's not what happens.

Bilbo's a bit of a Scrooge after his parents die; Kíli helps him open up & become part of the community again.

I Heard That Clan's All Trouble (39238 words) by Tawabids
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Summary: The curse of Thror took everything from Thorin; his home, his people's love, and finally his family and his sword arm. Then an old wizard in a pub brings him a key and the first good news he has heard in a long time - his nephews are alive and well in the Shire, the most unlikeliest of places.

Bilba Baggins had been quite happy living quietly on her own, but Bag End has not been quiet ever since two orphaned dwarves snuck into her life and made themselves at home. However, she will be damned if she lets a one-armed dwarf prince storm in and take them away after all these years.

She'll follow her boys to the ends of Middle Earth if she has to. And maybe, if he proves himself, she might even stand beside their king.

fem!Bilbo, which I love, fighting for her family, which I also love. Thorin is terrible at the beginning of the story, so, y'know, true to canon! This story is the one to blame for pulling me into the fandom; I had read one-off Hobbit epics before without any problems at all. Found family feels are dangerous.

all that shine as moonstone leave a discernible mark (2906 words) by kay_cricketed
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Summary: After the Battle of Five Armies, Thorin Oakenshield is determined to secure Bilbo's place in the world, even if he must make him a husband and a widower in the same hour to do so.

This is tragic. Read it when you need to feel sad, or already feel sad and want to cry. It's not exactly difficult to make me cry with writing (easier than with any other media, in fact) but I thought this story was beautifully done.

A Glittering Abyss (18501 words) by Salvia_G
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Summary: After the Battle of the Five Armies, Thorin has forgiven Bilbo; but Bilbo finds he cannot forgive Thorin.

Bilbo works hard to overcome the way Thorin treated him over the Arkenstone. Contains PTSD and a few of what I would read as panic attacks.

The Days of Dust (50078 words) by manic_intent
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Bofur
Summary: "'ullo again, Mister Baggins," the toymaker drawls, without turning around, and Bilbo laughs as he straightens up and steps into the candlelight.

It's still early enough into the evening that Bofur surely does not truly need to light the tapers as yet, but he's engaged in something delicate, it seems, his thick fingers busy on a knob of wood and his paring knife - he doesn't even look up when Bilbo circles the table to have a look.

"Someday you'll have to tell me how it is that you always know that I'm there."

I deeply enjoyed this AU and would read another 50K if the author cared to write it. The Shire was invaded by Orcs before Bilbo was born, and the surviving Hobbits moved the Ered Luin. Bilbo is a member of the Burglar's Guild, which Belladonna co-founded with Nori.

Hveðrungr's Children (14432 words) by manic_intent
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Fíli/Kíli/Thorin Oakenshield, Fíli/Kíli
Summary: After the disastrous battle in Moria, Thorin has a bitter fight with his sister and sends her away to the Iron Hills. Years after her passing, he visits the mines of the Iron Hills, and realizes that there is far more for him there than just the memory of her ghost.

Fíli and Kíli live feral in the deep stone. This was slightly creepy and perfect.

Ghivashel (44244 words) by mdseiran
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Thorin Oakenshield & Smaug
Summary: The last thing Bilbo expects when he stays up late one night is company. The strange dwarf and his companion crash into his life and prove unexpected saviours. But the dwarf seems to think he will be joining them on their travels, and Bilbo has no such intentions.

Smaug's treasure and Thorin's gold lust take very different forms in this AU.

The Road Delivered Us Home (117430 words) by keelywolfe
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield
Summary: In the years since Bilbo left Erebor, he has lost his respectability, gained a nephew, and gotten on with life at Bag End.

He'd left aside adventure for the comforts and peace of his little Hobbit hole, and for the love of a child who needed him. Though perhaps, adventures can yet find him.

31 Days Day 5-10

corbae, raven
Day 5: 10 songs you love right now
1. Westering - Hiss Golden Messenger
2. Miracle Temple Holiness - Mount Moriah
3. Jealousy and I - Torres
4. Fairytales & Other Forms of Suicide - Old Ceremony
5. Revolution Blues - Neil Young
6. First Shot - Love Language
7. Accident Prone - Jawbreaker
8. Lonely Boy - Black Keys
9. Death Valley - Fall Out Boy
10. Hey Mami - Sylvan Esso

Spotify playlistCollapse )

Day 6: Your 5 senses right now
See: my computer screen. Beyond that, my room, which is a bit messy.
Taste: the caramel kiss I had before leaving work.
Touch: my laptop keyboard, which is aluminum and ever-so-slightly rough.
Hear: 10 songs I love right now and the heat blowing through the vent.
Smell: nothing much due to my burgeoning cold

Day 7: Your pet hates
I am an irritable person and I have a lot of these. The one that springs to mind/makes me angriest is when people dismiss the South (or any region, but I have more ~feels about the South) out of hand as unfixable.

Day 8: What's in your handbag?
pictureCollapse )
clockwise from top left: a Korean day planner I bought almost entirely because it's called Moon Diary, a bracelet of ducks in a row, three pens, 2 Burt's Bees lip glosses, Sugar lip balm, a Maybelline lipstick, two flash drives, KEYS, glasses cleaning cloth, my overstuffed wallet, iPod/iPhone charger, and hand lotion.

Day 9: What are your worst habits?
I procrastinate terribly. I'm sharp with people too often. I'm bad at staying in touch with loved ones.

Day 10: What's your best physical feature?
I would say my eyes, which I think are an awesome shade of blue.

31 Days Day 3: Favorite Quote

I don't have a favorite quote, but this is one of my favorite poems:
Bogland by Seamus HeaneyCollapse )

Snowflake Challenge Day 2: Promote 3 blogs/communities/tumblrs/&c

1. stuckinabucket. I follow this blog for all of my crazy nature needs. The facts you learn are so great that you'll find yourself showing your parents the blog and then freaking out a little when your dad posts the link on Facebook, because it is also a general fandom blog. (Nothing particularly porny though, I checked pretty thoroughly after aforementioned Facebook incident.)

2. Star Maker Machine. I go through phases of following music blogs, but this will always be one of my favorites. Every two weeks there's a new theme, and the bloggers pick a song based on the theme & write about it.

3. Draw this Dress. Two wonderful artists draw people based on photos of vintage/antique/historical dresses, and their drawings bring the dresses to life. You can generally see the reference image by clicking on their drawings. It doesn't update often, but the updates always make me smile.

Honorable mentions (both music blogs): Said the Gramophone & Cover Lay Down.

Snowflake Challenge Day 3: Rec 3 Fanworks
I'm kind of terrified of the backlog AO3 bookmarks I have, so I'm gonna go with vids for this one.
1. Cuckoo by fiveyearmission (Iron Man). This is a Tony Stark character study based on the first two Iron Man movies and it's amazing; I love how the fractured, jumpy cuts so perfectly reflect Tony's persona.

2. Boy with the Bubblegun by bironic (The Hunger Games). This vid is what prompted me to finally watch the movie. I love the way bironic contrasts life in the Districts with life in the Capitol, and sets up the theme of revolution.

3. Moves by sisabet (Teen Wolf). This is a character study of Stiles through season 2 and is basically perfect. "These things get louder" paired with the increasing violence and death in Stiles' life and that minor chord (at least I think it's a minor chord?)--it's everything I want out of a character vid.

31 Days Day 2: 20 Facts About You

corbae, raven
1. I have dated 3 people total, and one of them was while I was in middle school.

2. I took dance classes--mostly tap, jazz, and ballet with some modern, lyrical, and a tiny bit of clogging--from age 3 to 17, when my dance studio closed. I liked jazz and tap best.

3. I played soccer until I was 11.

4. The only thing I've ever sprained was my ankle, and it happened while playing freeze tag in the library during a Mock Newbery book club lock-in.

5. Relatedly, the only bone I've broken is my wrist. I fell off the monkey bars and landed on it.

6. While we're on injuries, I gave myself a black eye by failing to catch a colorguard flag I'd thrown above my head. It fell onto my face (specifically, my glasses). It was the only black eye I've ever had.

7. I had blonde hair until I was in middle school.

8. When I studied abroad in Sheffield I spent the three weeks of Easter break traveling Europe by myself. It was incredible and I would love to do something like it again.

9. I love baking but get bored with sweet things after about the third serving so I never do it because: wasteful.

10. I learned how to drive on a car with manual transmission.

11. I was a Girl Scout for the long haul, kindergarten through my senior year of high school.

12. I am short, clocking in at a whopping 5'1-and-a-bit". My brother is the tallest person in our family at ~5'10".

13. I went to a year-round school through middle school, which meant I didn't experience a long summer break until 9th grade. Instead, I had 9 weeks of school alternating with 3 weeks of vacation, with 4 weeks off in December and over the summer.

14. During my school breaks--"track out"--I was normally in childcare at the YMCA. I loved the usual track out camp, not so much the one over the summer--all the kids were from traditional schools and I didn't know them--or the ones before or after school.

15. I am pretty OK with the usual creepy crawlies (spiders, snakes, rodents, insects of all stripes) unless they are a) touching me against my will, b) poisonous, or c) destructive.

16. I spent four years pretty heavily involved in my university's GLBTSA without realizing I was bisexual.

17. I am still trying to figure out how to tell my parents (read: my mom) because of the several times I was directly asked if I was gay (because of said heavy involvement with the GLBTSA) and protested tearfully that I wasn't but it didn't matter because it was about human rights issues and not my personal identity.

18. I love dressing up, both in costumes and fancy clothing.

19. My family has always had spaniels. My parents got their first dog, an American cocker spaniel, the year before I was born. Our next two dogs were English springer spaniels. Gibson is the first male dog we've had.

20. Once, I had the highest Accelerated Reader points in my grade (thank you Redwall books!) and got to choose a book as a prize. I picked Beauty by Robin McKinley and I think I've been obsessed with the trope ever since.

Snowflake Challenge Day 1
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Purest Element But It's So Volatile, a Ryan/Spencer story for BRBB. I struggled with this story a lot because the mix had so much packed into it, a lot of it painful, and I wasn't sure I could do it justice. I'm still not sure I did, honestly, but the story I wrote was out of my comfort zone and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Build A House Inside of You, a Derek/Stiles fanmix about two fucked-up people in a relationship that's failing because they refuse to deal with their own issues, their subsequent breakup, and their eventual reconciliation after some therapy and/or self-actualization. My 8tracks summary was more succinct. This was my first Teen Wolf mix and I worked on it for.fucking.ever.

sweaty sheets and an ocean view, art for TWHeatWave that's vaguely Derek/Stiles. This was the first drawing I completed in, gosh, at least a year, I think? So that was a pretty big deal. I also pushed myself more with the posing, the background, and the colors than I have in years.
